Apple is the world’s third largest smartphone maker – a mere 12.9 million behind Nokia

I apologize for that XXL-sized title but I had to do it.  With 1.7 million iPhones sold in Q1 2008, Apple has slotted right behind RIM as the world’s third largest maker of smartphones.  While it still has a long way to go before it can overtake RIM’s 4.3 million Blackberries sold in the same period, the gap between Apple and Nokia is, to put it lightly, wide.  Nokia continues its run at the top with a whopping 14.6 million units sold in Q1.

The second coming of the iPhone will most certainly boost Apple’s marketshare further but I don’t see it catching up to Nokia any time soon.  While it may lose out in the US, Nokia’s utter dominance of Europe and several markets in Asia will help it stay on top.  Hell, Apple will have a hard time just overtaking RIM.  The company has the Blackberry Bold and the Kickstart lined up for release, which will keep it in the #2 spot for now.  Apple’s life will become even harder if US-based carriers start offering more Nokia smartphones that have not been castrated.

What these numbers also indicate is exactly how far behind all the other cell phone manufacturers are.  Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Palm, LG, and others are not even in the top three.  They do move a lot of non-smartphone devices, however.

Before I sign off, may I say how much I hate the shameless coverage given to the iPhone by the interwebs?  It’s disgusting.  I get it – you guys are all Apple fanboys.  Now can we please stop with this madness?  I just hope Jobs announces the new iPhone at WWDC on Monday so that all the wild speculation can finally stop.

Internet Radio is Cool

I’m talking about the Symbian version.  I have it installed on my N95-3 and I tried it out today.  The interface is slick and the speeds are good, courtesy the ad-hoc Wi-fi from my laptop.  The number of stations is staggering to say the least.  It’s going to be a while before I identify the good ones.

I guess this is more useful if you have an unlimited data plan from your carrier.  Then, it becomes a lot more practical since you can use it anytime, anywhere.  I mean, I have all my music on my Zen/laptop and it doesn’t make much sense to use it when I’m in my room.  Plus, I can get a more diverse range of internet radio stations from my laptop.  I think this software might come in handy when I’m on campus and want to listen to some new music, instead of what I already have on my phone.

Anyway, just thought I’d post a blurb about this.  If you have an S60 handset, grab Internet Radio from the following link:

Be sure to check for compatibility before downloading any files!

N95-3 1.5 Month Report

I love Spring. The skies are a clear shade of blue, the sun is out, the weather turns warm and pleasant, the miniskirts come out, and girls in bikinis sun bathe on the lawns at Columbia. It truly is a wonderful time of the year. It has taken a while to set in this year, but I love all this warm weather! Makes me want to avoid doing any work, or at least do it outside in the sun.

Then why am I on a computer writing out yet another blog entry, you ask? I have no friends. All my homework this week requires a computer. And as you might know, my laptop is in no condition to be out in the open on its own, untethered from its feeding tube external monitor. Oh well, things are what they are. Can’t do much to change them. OR CAN I? Nah, not really.

N95-3 One Week Report

So, I’ve had the N95-3 for a week and perhaps that’s enough time to take a look at it again. Things that I’ve grown to really love and things that can get annoying.

The WiFi is absolutely great. It is annoying how the OS asks you to choose an access point every single time instead of using preferred networks. But apart from that, connection takes very little time and at least on Columbia University’s network, speeds are very good. The S60 browser is nice but you can also install Opera Mini which works well too! For instant messaging, I installed fring. It takes care of all the IM clients I use so in a way, it’s like Pidgin.

The phone is relatively responsive and it takes a lot to slow it down. Not having a Task Manager built-in means that you can’t just open it and shut down applications that aren’t in use. The camera does its job well and almost feels like a standalone digicam. The music player is good as long as you pair it with decent ‘phones. Actually, Nokia bundles a decent pair of earphones but they fit poorly.

Coming from the 6230, the N95 does feel a little chunky and heavy. But it also feels solid in the hand and the matte finish in the back keeps the phone in your hand. I’m glad that I got the screen protector, otherwise my display would’ve been messed up already! The buttons are comfortable to use and I’ve been getting roughly two days from every charge. That includes about an hour of music, 1.5 hours of WiFi, some gaming, and some messaging+phone calls. So, I’m happy with that.

I’ve been slowly installing software and learning how to perform things like copy+paste, go to a new line, etc. It’s exciting and fun! Also, I managed to turn a couple of heads when I pulled out my N95 to takes pictures during a lab.

I’ve been hopelessly addicted to Snakes. My initial opinion was that this was a gimmicky version of my favorite, Snake II. However, as I started playing it more and more, I realized that this is a wonderful game. You need to get adjusted to the 3-D perspective and the tricky nature of the maps but it’s a lot of fun. I’m almost through with all the stages and want MOAR! While the game fun and all, the fact that the S60 menu and multimedia keys lie right next to the navigation controls gets annoying. I press one of the two keys accidentally a lot and then have to wait for the multimedia menu to load so that I can quit it and then go back to playing the game. It would be nice if there was a way to disable those two keys during gaming. They get in the way of the fun.

I should also add in a note on the display. It’s gorgeous. The viewing angle on this thing is amazing – there’s barely any loss in quality even at the largest of viewing angles!

What’s next? I’m going to try and figure out how to get the 3G video call camera to work with something like fring or Skype and make video calls over WiFi. I also need to change all my ringtones and find some good wallpapers! I’ll be back with the One Month Report when the time comes. More posts are forthcoming once I survive three midterms this week.

Meet the Nokia N95-3

Yes, I finally caved in and bought the N95-3. For those not in the know, this is the US 3G version of the classic N95 with a better battery and more RAM. Everything else is identical to the original version that came out in April last year. Since there are numerous reviews of the classic N95 as well as the N95-3, I’ll spare you the usual review bullshit and get down to the main points in brief.
