Manchester United Win The Champions League!!

Manchester United Are The Champions Of Europe!

Oh man, what a day!  No really, WHAT A DAY!  Manchester United were crowned champions of Europe for the first time since 1999, thus winning the Double (EPL and UCL).  It was a nerve-wracking final.  Ronaldo put United ahead on 26 minutes with a pinpoint header after a superb cross from Brown.  Paul Scholes also played a role in the goal, as it was his brilliant 1-2 with Brown that provided the setup for the goal.  But as luck would have it, United missed a couple of chances and then Chelsea levelled just before half-time.

The scores stayed level after 90 minutes and the game went into extra-time.  Even 30 minutes of extra time could not separate the two teams.  However, Drogba was sent off 4 minutes before the end for slapping Vidic - a similar incident got Zidane sent off in the 2006 World Cup final, and Italy went on to win that game on penalties.  In somewhat of a repeat, United beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties to lift the European crown.

Of course, with the game going to penalties, I had to wait 7 hours after it ended to find out the final result.  I had my 3/BTBAM/Opeth/Dream Theater concert to go to, and I was already worried that the doors would open before I got there.  That didn’t happen, but the line was already going around the block and I had to settle for a spot on the second floor balcony.  I was right above the soundboard so sound-wise, I was in a good place.  Anyway, more on the concert tomorrow.  Right now, I need to relax and enjoy the victory!

Next Wednesday has too many things happening

My head might just explode. First, we have the UEFA Champions League Final between Manchester United and Chelsea. Of course, you all should know by now whom I will be supporting. Then, there’s the Dream Theater/Opeth concert which while definitely awesome, will be tiring due to four bands playing for a total of nearly four hours. As if this wasn’t enough, I just learned that the first installment of the Penny Arcade game also hits next Wednesday. It will be interesting to see what Tycho and Gabe came up with after years of experience gained by criticizing the work of others (when it sucked).

But that’s next week. Before that, I need to get through my 2.333 remaining finals. Peace the fuck out.

Countdown to Freedom: 40 hours.

Manchester United win the EPL

Oh man what a day of football!  United went in front courtesy a penalty by Cristiano Ronaldo, then Chelsea also went 1-0 up at home to Bolton.  I got the feeling that the team to score a second goal would be crowned champions of England.  Thankfully, that second goal went to United - this time, Giggs scoring from a Rooney pass.  I did not watch the game but let me assure you that I was biting my nails nonetheless.  The icing on the cake was Bolton’s late goal at Stamford Bridge.  But after a riveting season, Man United have come out on top, deserved winners.  At the other end of the table, Reading and Birmingham were relegated along with Derby, despite winning comfortably today.

While the madness was still in progress, I had this crazy thought that United and Chelsea could both lose and if Arsenal won, they’d be only a point away from equaling United and Chelsea’s points total!  As it ended, Untied got 87, Chelsea 85, and Arsenal 83.  Only 6 points separated the top 3 teams - shows how fierce the competition was this season.

In 10 days, the Champions League Final will take place in Moscow and I hope United can stick to Chelsea again!  I then get to see Opeth and Dream Theater play live that night.  Should be awesome.

Countdown to D-Day:  0 DAYS ZOMG IT’S HERE.  FINALS TIME.

All-English final in Moscow

Again, my post today will be brief. When you spend most of the day working on two essays, not a lot of things happen, unfortunately.

So, after a nervy game, Chelsea halted Liverpool’s bid to reach another UCL final by beating them 3-2 at Stamford Bridge.  This sets up a date with Manchester United in May.  So, two English teams will battle it out for the UCL trophy.  It should be a terrific game because one of these teams will have been crowned Premier League champions by then, and the other will be keen to bring home some silverware to avoid a trophy-less season.  The race for the EPL crown is wide open after Manchester United drew two games and lost to Chelsea last Saturday.

As United supporter, I want Man U to win both titles and consign Chelsea to a season where they couldn’t win a single trophy.  As someone more in tune with reality, I realize this will be difficult to pull off.  United need to play their best football of the season to bring home both titles.  I know they can do it but I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch.  It’s just that recent performances have not been very encouraging.  That win against Barca should boost confidence however and hopefully, Ronaldo still has three more great days left in him.

I’ll be keeping my fingers and toes crossed.  Back to writing essays then!

The debasement of cricket

Let me make it clear right out of the gate that I hate the ICC. It’s supposed to be cricket’s governing body, but all I see is ineptitude and politicking. Think about it - the next two ICC presidents have already been chosen. Malcolm Speed, as much as you might hate him, was thrown out for refusing to side with a point of view that was against his fundamental beliefs. The situation in Zimbabwe has been deplorable for several years now. Players across the world are motivated by the pots of money being dangled in front of them. Add to that the utterly incompetent BCCI and its single-minded approach to milk cricket for ridiculous sums of money, and you have what I like to call a clusterfuck.

There’s no point in listing the numerous debacles that the ICC has been involved in over the years - they have been well-documented. What’s frustrating is the ICC’s inability to learn from past mistakes and enforce the laws of the game in a fair manner. Furthermore, they keep cramming the international calendar with more and more events, thus diluting the importance of the ODI World Cup. We now have the Champions Trophy, the Twenty20 World Cup, and a proposed T20 Champions League for top domestic T20 teams from around the world. On top of these events, the ICC expects every international team to play a certain number of Tests and ODIs every year. Eventually, the players are just not going to be able to cope and will start breaking down, retiring, or only playing one form of the game.

With the latest saga surrounding Speed, it’s become clear that there is deep-rooted factionalism within the ICC. The BCCI perhaps wields too much power due to its enormous wealth. Instead of actually improving playing conditions for the domestic competition or assisting poorer boards, the BCCI just looks for new ways to make more money. Nothing exemplifies the greed within the BCCI better than the fact that politicians such as Sharad Pawar are in charge of running it. Here’s a man who first broke away from the Congress to form the NCP, only to come crawling right back to Sonia Gandhi by forming an alliance for the sake of power in Maharashtra. This man has no integrity and is entrusted with running the world’s richest sporting body. Fantastic.

During the Harbhajan incident in Australia, I was happy that the BCCI was doing something about it, even if it involved arm-twisting the ICC. My support was not for the player - Bhajji is hardly the ideal role-model - but for justice. There was insufficient evidence to prove he was guilty and Procter believed the Aussies’ word over that of the Indians. After having gotten off the hook, Harbhajan goes and slaps Sreesanth after Mumbai lost their third consecutive IPL game. Great way to mask your inability to lead the team to a win. I think he just lost all the sympathy he gained from the Indian fans during the Australia series. Furthermore, he is going to create discomfort in the national team dressing room, if chosen for any more international tournaments.

As a cricket fan, I’m concerned with the current state of affairs. There is an increasing amount of resources being dedicated to add glamor to the game by means of T20 games. While it’s great that the ICC wants to take the game to countries like the US and increase popularity, a better course of action will be to first improve things in countries that already play the game. You need a strong platform before you start building up. Unfortunately, that platform is looking increasingly shaky and threatens to take down the whole building with it.  The game needs strong leadership that is free from political wrangles, greed, and factionalism.  But where is it going to come from?  Certainly not from those currently in charge.  Former players with influence and who care about the game, please take over the ICC.  I will tolerate bad TV commentary for the sake of the game.
