The Wiik That Was

So, after months of waiting, the Wii finally arrived last Sunday. Wii’ve had it for a wiik and wii are addicted to it. Wii Sports is an amazing game - provides workouts and gets everyone to get up from their chair and do some physical work. Zelda looks great and expansive. My limbs are tired from Wii Sports. And although I would rather go play some Wii Baseball, I must write this entry.

Of Russell Peters and Next Gen Insanity

Last night me and friends went to see Russell Peters do stand-up in New York City. It was simply fantaastic. A-1. First Class.

For those unfamiliar with Russell Peters, he’s a Canadian Indian now living in LA that does awesome stand-up comedy. His punch lines and best acts have to do Indian stereotypes which us Indians would find either offensive, hilarious, or offensively hilarious. Personally, I subscribe to the third one. And the best part is, we know most of it is true. He did a joke yesterday about how Indian parents will lie to their daughters just so that they stay away from boys. “Don’t go out with boys. If you do, don’t hold their hands. That’s how you get pregnant.” So true! He has a DVD out called “Outsourced” that has some funny shit about Indians, Asians, and everyone else. These guys are way more offensive and vulgar live than on TV. Apparently he’ll be doing shows in India next year and is petrified since his punch lines are standard behavior for Indians. Will they laugh with him? Or will they laugh at totally different reasons such as his accent?

Moving on, if there’s one thing that new console launches teach us time and time again, it’s that the public goes bananas when new consoles are in short supply at launch. If you haven’t read up yet, do some googling or digging and you’ll find numerous incidents that happened at the US PS3 launch. The best one I think was one where they guys from smashmyps3.com sledge-hammered a brand new PS3 outside a Best Buy in New York. Right in front of dozens of fanboys lined up to get hold of a PS3. Other events included drive-by shootings, people getting mugged, brawls breaking out, and what have you.

Personally, I’ve never been a fan of PlayStation. I hate the PS2. I think the PS3 is great hardware but the high price and other problems plaguing Sony in general make it a bad decision to get one at launch. Wait for the dust to settle. Let units become readily available and for better games to come out. Me and my roommate have waited on a 360 for a year now. Good titles are coming out now but we want to hold off a little longer. Sure, we’re itching to play Gears of War, but we will wait. We know MS is going to put in 65nm processors sometime soon and there are rumors of an upgraded HDD as well as an integrated HD-DVD drive. Plus, we anticipate a price drop, no matter what Microsoft says.

But, tomorrow is Wii day. I’m going to head out with my roommate as he gets his Wii at a local GameStop tomorrow morning. Furthermore, and this is the best part, one of my buddies’ dad won an Xbox 360 Core System at a raffle and is going to pass it on to my friend in exchange for his old Xbox! We will soon go from no next gen to 2 next gen units! And since my roomie has a 720p capable Dell 23″ LCD, the 360 is gonna spend a lot of time here. Oh, and Amazon has this new dealy where they put up four incredible deals for customers to vote on and the winning deal is offered in limited quantities to everyone. The Xbox 360 Core System at $100 is one of the deals. It’s winning the vote with 85% last I checked and we hope to be able to snag one of the 1000 units that will be available. We can get the hard drive later and buy wireless controllers. No sweat.

I’ll post again tomorow with images of Wii procurement, unboxing, and the first run. These are exciting times people. Not to mention a Quantum Mechanics exam on Monday at 9am. Good times!

Borat! Very Nice! Sexy Time!

Saw Borat today. We made an unsuccessful attempt last Friday when we got to the theater only to find out 3 shows were house-full and the only the midnight show was available. Sucked. Today being Election Day, we got off and went to see Borat. The theater wasn’t full but there was still a sizable crowd. The movie made an astounding $26.5 million from it’s opening weekend - from just 837 screens! That’s a per theater average of over $31.6k. Unbelievable.

When you do see the movie, you’ll see why so many people are going to watch this movie. It is simply THE BEST COMEDY of the year, and one of the best ever, I think. For those who’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, Borat follows a reporter from Kazakhstan, named Borat Sagdiyev. The Kazakh government sends him to US and A to learn more about the culture and return with advice to improve Kazakhstan. He leaves his town of Kursek for New York City. While here, he watches an episode of Baywatch and falls in love with Pamela Anderson. From here on, his single mission is to meet Pamela, marry her, and take away her virginity. Since she lives in California, him and his producer Azamat, undertake a long road trip from NYC to California. The movie documents his several adventures and “cultural learnings” along the way, culminating in an outrageous scene where he tries to marry Pamela Anderson. The movie involves some profanity and nudity but is incredibly funny. During some parts, I couldn’t stop laughing and had to tear my eyes from the screen because I couldn’t take all the humor.

Borat is an Anti-Semite, homophobic, against women’s rights, and innocently hilarious. Along the way, he takes a stab at everything from cowboys/rodeos to fine dining. It’s hard to explain how good this movie really is - you HAVE to see it to believe it. The movie will most likely offend a lot of people, but I say it’s deliberately offensive so as to be funny. It’s funny because of how far Borat pushes the envelope for the sake of comedy. I won’t say that if you don’t like it, then you have no sense of humor. Nor will I say that those who like it had “bad upbringing” or anything retarded like that. Just watch it. Remember that it’s only comedy. It wouldn’t be funny if Borat actually meant anything he does or says.

Canon PowerShot A710 IS Review

Earlier this year, my trusty PowerShot A75 suffered a lens misalignment which caused the camera to become myopic - no kidding. It wouldn’t focus at anything. Camera stores were looking for $200 for repair while Canon was asking for $85 + shipping minimum. I decided, I’d just wait it out and get a new one later in the year. Well, that wait came to end last month when I finally settled for the Canon PowerShot A710 IS camera. Read one to find out what I think of it. There’s a gallery at the end for you to look at.
