Horror Stories: Part II
As I promised, here is part 2. Part 1 was about my trip here. So let me tell you what happened after I got here.
Now, like you read, I got back Sunday evening. The house is pretty nice. The city is *all right* and I would stay at home most of the time anyway. Nothing compares to Bombay and New York so I won’t bother talking about the city. The first problem here is electricity, or rather, the lack of it. It disappears as and when it wants - on Wednesday and Thursday all day from morning to evening. Surprisingly, today there were only 3 times when the electricity went out and that too for less than 15 minutes. But other than today, it’s been bad. And it is particularly annoying when it goes off while I’m watching Scrubs or surfing the net. And if it happens during web-surfing, then it brings it’s own issue. Read on.
It took me 2 days to get DataOne to work. Why? BSODs. Each time I tried to connect, my computer would crash with a BSOD. Sometimes with a driver noted, sometimes nothing. And not just my laptop, but my desktop too. I tried all that I could and nothing was working. I kept fiddling with some settings and finally got it to work. And then a BSOD again the next time.
I was frustated. I kept messing with settings and ultimately got it to work. It does have a curious problem though. I need to switch on the router first and then my laptop else I get a BSOD. Furthermore, if the electricty goes out while I’m surfing, my computer hangs and all I can do is switch it off and wait for the electricity to come back. Yes, it’s that bad. I ain’t calling these “horror stories” for nothin’ you see. And it is particularly annoying if I’m watching Scrubs or Firefly. Not just those two, I have faced a frozen computer twice while typing this blog entry. Thank God for the Save option.Fear of losing electricity has meant that I have played NFS only once in the entire week. Luckily, I had shut down the game just before the lights went out. FarCry is sitting in my drawer. I only just started using my external hard drive. Have been on Scrubs overdose. So I started watching Firefly finally yesterday but not without an interruption or two. Arrested Development will be up next. For now, back to the Scrubs episode that froze twice so far.
Electricity problems have also forced me to postpone my feature article on the Top Things of 2005. Well, you shall get it in the new year. This is my last blog entry for 2005. Happy New Year 2006!! Don’t forget to visit again for the feature article

hahahahahaha !
man ! that was one helluva funny experience.
btw nemi, welcome to North India. from your experience in Haryana, you can guess what’s the situation in the neighbouring state “Punjab” even though Punjab’s Bhakra Dam is supposed to generate a major part of electricity for North India, still it’s the Punjabis who face the maximum power cuts. to top it all, electricity is almost 60% more costly in Punjab as compared to neighbouring states and Chandigarh UT.
as for the bsnl BSODs, sarkari connection hai, aise hi chalega
you need a private service provider, if you want quality of service.
I can’t pinpoint the problem but I faced a similar issue in the summer when I tried to set up a wireless network.
Welcome to India!
Rock on and have a good time till you leave for NY.
I already have said abt my Dataone issues, but I will mention abt it here: It wont connect unless I have some media player running (or paused) so everytime I need to connect to internet, I open Foobar2000 or VLC player and then connect
P.S: When do you plan to have a Digit Hissar meet?
LOL!!! I know one person on Digit who is from Hisar. But I like to stay away from him. And no way in hell am I going to meet him or any others.
lol…What a contrast between NY & Hisar!
Jeezus! you really have been through a nightmare. Thank God they have proper electricity for capital and when i go back to jammu, it gets annoying as hell..i have seen 14 hours cut a day during may - june when murcury soars at 47 C. LOL!!!its funny tho

reminds me of my time back in bangladesh

It’s been in the last two days - Almost all day electricity. Apparently, a minister has been elected from my town into the State Government. I believe that’s the reason for this sudden windfall….
