Syriana: Thoughts & Impressions

So we went to watch Syriana today. Good movie. Really good. Gotta appreciate the guts and sensibilities of the film makers.

So, let’s get to the point - Syriana is about the oil situation in the Middle East. That means the movie involves a lot of politics. Make no bones about it - this is a SERIOUS movie. No fooling around here. It is not one of those movies where you can sit back, relax and be entertained. You need to pay attention and really appreciate what’s going on. A lot of the movie has subtitles because the actors talk in Arabic/Urdu, Farsi and guess what, Hindi. I got quite a kick out of all the Hindi dialogues and was quite satisfied with the subtitles. George Clooney plays a CIA agent and HE HAS A BEARD!!! Matt Damon plays a consultant (advisor to a Prince) and Jeffrey Wright (Angels in America) plays a lawyer. The story has multiple subplots which seem very disconnected and it is only at the very end that most of the plot makes sense. However, the movie still left me with a sense of incompleteness - perhaps because the bad guys win. Or do they? A suicide bombing in the end sort of confused me. Acting is top notch and the story is well written though disjointed. The editing in some places was choppy - it might have been done on purpose, but in some places it looked really bad as they cut from one scene to another abruptly. Another potential problem with the movie is that those unaware of the on-goings in the Middle East might find the information in the movie hard to digest. But, like I said - this is a serious movie and an intelligent one too.

But the movie was marred by a small incident. Some cranky bitch told me and my friend to shut up while I was explaining some of the plot to my friend. We got into a little bit of a fight with that female at the end of the show but whatever. It was a good movie and the theater was full. But those not interested in political movies or those who have no clue about what or where the Middle East is, this movie will either go over the head or be plain boring. Highly recommended to those who follow activities in the Middle East.
